As a result of participation in this activity, learners will be able to:
- Review the history of simulation in medicine, its established uses, and future applications.
- Discuss measurement issues that challenge the use of simulation in competency assessment.
- Identify current options for simulation in surgery.
- Describe the state of virtual reality (VR) simulation technology in different disciplines.
- Discuss the benefits of 3D technology and haptics in simulation scenarios.
- Identify the state-of-the art simulation in interventional cardiology.
- Describe the applicability of simulation to the evaluation of the post-licensure physician in different medical specialties.
- Discuss the role of simulation in anesthesiology.
- Differentiate between the needs and standards appropriate for high-stakes competency assessments (such as those performed by accrediting boards requiring absolute data) versus those appropriate for qualitative competency assessments used for directed remedial education.
- Discuss how scenarios are designed to ensure that the content reflects clinical performance.
