National Clinical Assessment Service (NCAS) The NCAA is at present a free standing Authority within the National Health Service (NHS), with its own Board and Executive Team. It is funded directly by the NHS, with a budget which comes out of the larger general taxation funding for the health. In April 2005 the NCAA will be brought into a new National Patient Safety Authority (NPSA) and will be a Directorate Service within this organization. The NCAA came into being in response to the patient safety agenda, media attention following some infamous cases, and the political agenda. This regulatory body holds the License to Practice. The NCAA works at a different (but related) level to support health care staff resolve concerns about medical and dental performance. Doctors and Dentists in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are referred by their employer organizations known as the referring bodies (RBs) where there are performance concerns that are not so severe that patient safety is identified as a significant concern. www.ncaa.nhs.uk |
