"The mission of the Coalition for Physician Enhancement (CPE) is to support and develop expertise in assessment and enhancement when competence and/or performance are to be assessed."

Current CPE Research Projects

Part of the mission of the Coalition for Physician Enhancement is to conduct and support ongoing research. Research projects conducted by CPE members that are currently underway include:

1. Chart audit tool development: Initiated by Bill Sieber and PACE, this project has used physician focus groups and previous abstraction instrument sin the literature to create a two-page rating form to be used on single chart entries. Several CPE members have participated in the final stage of using the instrument to establish initial reliability and validity of the tool. The creation of this instrument will ideally facilitate higher quality and more standardized chart auditing by organizations. Preliminary results will be shared at the CPE meeting in Philadelphia I October 2005.

2. Common variables project: CPE organizational members are interested in pooling select data from program participants in order to identify differences between program and trends across program in participant characteristics. In order to accomplish these goals common coding schemes are being developed and barriers to data-sharing will be identified. CPE programs wishing to participate and share data for internal development/improvement and possible research efforts will be sending to Bill Sieber data of identified variables from 15 previous participants; data will then be reported on at CPE meeting in Philadelphia in October 2005.

3. Reporting of physician performance: The CPE seeks to analyze the summary reports that result from the physician assessments conducted by its member organizations to see what patterns exist and to begin the process using shared language. The goal of this project is to see how physician competency is reported across CPE member programs.

Here is some resource information related to physician assessment, education, and a variety of other topics relevant to the work of the CPE.
